From Vodka to Beef Jerky: What (and Where!) Country Stars Ate Before the CMAs

It turns out, the most rebellious thing you can do before a red carpet is eat (get ready to gasp!) – a carb!

With all the body-clinging dresses and slim-fitting tuxes, ever watch an awards show on TV and wonder, “What do these people eat?” Well, we do, too! So we asked the stars on the CMA Awards red carpet to share what they nibbled on in preparation for the big show. Here’s what they told us:

Lady A’s Hillary Scott: “I had guacamole and cucumbers, but I’ve had so much coffee I think that’s what’s getting me through.”

Lady A’s Dave Haywood: “I went to Star Bagel in Sylvan Park and had a Starz Classic.” [It’s a sandwich on toasted sourdough with melted mozzarella, ham, salami, garlic butter, black olives, lettuce, tomatoes, onions and mustard].

Lady A’s Charles Kelley: “Beef jerky and whiskey.”

Little Big Town’s Karen Fairchild: “There’s a local Tennessee company that makes these things called Gold Bars and they’re all natural and organic and they have things like oats and a little bit of chocolate and peanut butter in them. We always take a bite of that. It gives you a boost of protein. I also did a little scoop of chicken salad and some fruit.”ADVERTISING

LBT’s Kimberly Schlapman: “I also had a Gold Bar, it’s like a no-bake chocolate oatmeal cookie, but healthier.”

LBT’s Jimi Westbrook: “I had chicken skewers and some rice.”

LBT’s Phillip Sweet: “I had a chicken salad sandwich and some soup. It was quite lovely.”

Kip Moore: “Tuna fish. Not a sandwich though, just straight tuna fish.”

Hunter Hayes: “I didn’t eat much. I had a little bowl of pasta and one piece of pizza and it was awesome.”

Thomas Rhett: “I ate once today. I had a salad and the best biscuit ever from Barista Parlor – sausage, honey, peach jam – it’s insane.”

Colton Swon: “Starbucks! I had some black tea, sweetened. And actually, I had a couple of pieces of pizza that were left over from last night.”

Zach Swon: “I had a little pork slider.”

Scotty McCreery: “I had Cook Out. I go there a bunch. I love the big double burger and the spicy chicken sandwich.”

Ashley Monroe: “I had a little vodka and water, a little refresher.”

Josh Turner: “Unfortunately, I didn’t get to eat very much before I came so I’m a little famished right now. If I faint, pick me up please. I had some rotisserie chicken, carrots and potatoes and kale and apple salad. My wife made it, she’s a saint.”

Lucy Hale: “I had French fries with ranch dressing and a Diet Coke. Everything is better with ranch dressing.”

Kacey Musgraves: “I eat good protein before a show. I’m not going to eat mac and cheese and spaghetti I’m going to eat a really simple piece of grilled fish or chicken, and lots of water. I had tilapia today.”

Brandy Clark: “I eat a little bit before a show so I don’t pass out. I had a little grilled chicken and salad. I did the 21-day fit food challenge before this. And I did the juice thing and felt great, then I got sick!”

Martina McBride: “I had a salad and some green beans but I usually wait until after – it’s better for the dress. My manager brought me salad, green beans and mac and cheese, but I turned down the mac and cheese. On the way home we’ll stop at something like Waffle House or Krystal.”

The Band Perry’s Kimberly Perry: “I had shrimp and grits and sweet tea.”

TBP’s Reid Perry: “There’s a restaurant called Whiskey Kitchen, I had the burger.”

TBP’s Neil Perry: “Fish tacos.”

Billy Currington: “I eat like six times a day! I went to Swett’s, it’s been there since like the ’30s or ’40s. They do soul food. I did turnip greens and some chicken. It’s like going home.”
