Elderberry, also known as Sambucus nigra, is a medicinal plant that has been cherished for centuries for its healing properties. The elderberry plant, with its vibrant berries, delicate flowers, and even its leaves, has been a staple in traditional medicine. People have long used fresh berries and relied on it to support immune function, reduce inflammation, and alleviate flu symptoms. Fast forward to today, and elderberry has made a grand entrance into the world of dietary supplements. With a plethora of products on the market, from elderberry syrup to gummies, it’s no wonder this herbal supplement is gaining traction for its immune support and ability to ease cold and flu symptoms.

What is Elderberry?

Elderberry is a small, dark purple fruit that grows on the European or Black elder tree (Sambucus nigra). This fruit is a powerhouse of antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals, making it a popular choice in traditional medicine. Known by many names, including Black Elder, Holunderbeeren, and Sureau Noir, elderberry’s rich history and widespread use are a testament to its health benefits. Whether you call it Arbre de Judas or Schwarzer Holunder, the elderberry’s reputation as a natural remedy is well-deserved.

Immune System Benefits

Elderberry has been a go-to remedy for boosting the immune system for generations. The berries are packed with anthocyanins, potent antioxidants with impressive anti-inflammatory properties. When you take elderberry extract, it stimulates the production of cytokines, proteins that play a crucial role in fighting off infections and autoimmune diseases. Moreover, elderberry’s immunomodulatory effects help regulate the immune system, ensuring it doesn’t overreact to infections. This makes elderberry a valuable ally in maintaining a balanced and effective immune response.

Reducing Cold or Flu Symptoms

When it comes to battling cold or flu symptoms, elderberry has a long-standing reputation. The berries contain compounds with anti-inflammatory and antiviral properties, which can help reduce symptoms like fever, headache, and congestion. Elderberry syrup, in particular, has been shown in several studies to shorten the duration and lessen the severity of cold and flu symptoms. Its antiviral properties also help prevent the spread of infections, making elderberry a must-have in your natural remedy arsenal.

Heart Health Benefits

Elderberry isn’t just about fighting colds; it also offers potential heart health benefits. The berries are rich in anthocyanins, which have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. These compounds help reduce inflammation in the body, a key factor in lowering the risk of heart disease. Additionally, elderberry has been found to have antihypertensive effects, helping to lower blood pressure. While more research is needed to fully confirm these benefits, the current findings are promising and suggest that elderberry could be a heart-healthy addition to your diet.

Is Elderberry an Immune Support Superhero?

If you’re like me, you keep hearing people talk about taking elderberry supplements and making elderberry-infused snacks. It seems to be the kale of the new decade. So that got me thinking: What is all the rage about, and should I jump on this bandwagon, too?

While the elderberry fruit has specific medicinal benefits, American Elder, along with Elderflower and Dwarf Elder, do not provide the same intended benefits and should not be confused with elderberry.

Well, there is quite a bit of truth to the health benefits of elderberry supplements. Look at some ways I’ve discovered that you can benefit from elderberry…

1. It may help to fight colds and the flu

Now more than ever, we’re all trying to keep our body's immune system and systems strong. Between Covid and the regular cold and flu season, adding a little immune-boosting supplement might not be such a bad idea. One study published by the U.S. National Library of Medicine found that participants who consumed elderberry syrup felt relief from their flu symptoms four days earlier on average than those who received a placebo.

2. It could improve heart health & lower the risk of diabetes

Because elderberries are rich in three types of flavanols — naturally occurring compounds in plants with antioxidant properties — they may help to improve heart health. According to UPMC HealthBeat, research has also shown elderberries can reduce fat levels in the blood, lower cholesterol, and improve blood sugar levels. Those are all benefits that I’m on board with!

3. May Help Depression and Fatigue

This past year has been tough on everyone’s mental health. Not to mention, fatigue can affect all of us daily. However, elderberry contains many B vitamins, including B1, B2, B3, B5, B6, and B9 (folate), as well as Iron and Magnesium. These vitamins play a significant role in boosting mood and providing energy. “Yes, please!”

4. Could Protect against UV Radiation

Now, don’t stop wearing your sunscreen just because you took your elderberry supplement this morning. According to Healthline.com, a skin product containing elderberry extract was found to have a sun protection factor (SPF) of 9.88. “Ok, I’ll take an extra 9+ SPF, thank you very much.”

5. Reduces Inflammation

Because elderberries are high in antioxidants, they’ve been shown to reduce inflammation. The anthocyanins found in the berries have as much as 3.5 times the antioxidant power of vitamin E, according to an article on Healthline.com. Additionally, one study found that antioxidant status improved in people just one hour after drinking 400 ml of elderberry juice. “Those are some speedy results, if you ask me”.

The list goes on! With as many benefits as there appear, elderberry seems to be an excellent supplement. It’s one that I don’t mind adding to my daily routine, especially since it tastes pretty great, too! You can’t ask for more with options like Elderberry Gummies or elderberry syrups.
